"I did this movie "The Notebook". It was a long time ago and I had a lot of people talk to me about that film. A lot of people thought it was romantic but one guy told me he was engaged when he went to see that movie and he wasn’t when they left. She said to him when they left "You wouldn’t build a house for me, would you?" And he said "No… because I don’t know how". And she said "If you did know how, would you build a house?" and he said "No, probably not". And she called it off. I think there’s a practical element to love. [Blue Valentine] is kind of all the stuff that that film skirted over.”
You know how sometimes department stores have these things where, if you win, you get 10 minutes and go in and take anything you want from the store? That’s basically what I’m doing. I’m running in and just trying to grab as many characters as possible before they pull the plug on me.
“I feel like men are more romantic than women. When we get married, we marry, like, one girl, ‘cause we’re resistant the whole way until we meet one girl and we think, “I’d be an idiot if I didn’t marry this girl. She’s so great”. But it seems like girls get to a place where they just kinda pick the best option”
